Looking Back at Summer Heat
It was an incredibly hot summer which made it a challenge to paint "en plein air." Nevertheless, my students were real troopers and painted outside in the heat and relentless humidity.
It has been very rewarding teaching my students to look at nature in a different way, in terms of shapes and colors and light instead of the minute details. When I teach I also learn things from my students — patience, motivation under challenging conditions and distinctive ways of interpreting nature. My students’ work reflected their unique points of view, which I find so interesting.
Coming Up: Autumn in New England and the North Shore
With fall approaching I am looking forward to teaching in the many beautiful locations on the North Shore. Appleton Farms in Ipswich is a treasure and the glorious avenue of golden maple trees is a perfect spot to paint. The colors of an autumn marsh at the Essex County Greenbelt property is a painter’s dream with its rich ochres, burnt sienna and golden yellows. The dramatic blues, purples and warm grays on the rocky shores in Magnolia are an inspiration. We will paint grand vistas of deep greens and cobalt blues overlooking the ocean at Coolidge Point in Manchester by the Sea. If you're interested in planning an outdoor painting excursion, the Teaching page has more details about the "en plein air" lessons I offer.
