Looking back at 2018 . . . creatively speaking

Michèle J. Kenna’s Studio

It was quite a year in terms of building up my portfolio and challenging myself to new ways of expression. Taking many photographs, interpreting them in my studio and trying to capture the essence, not the details, is a challenge I love.

I always come back to the theme of paths taking us to an unknown destination — is there a metaphor here? Also, flowing rivers and streams are a constant pull and I never tire of painting them. I like to think of my paintings depicting nature as symbols of our place on this earth and how precious it is.

No wonder last year flew by! Solo and group shows at Gallery 95 at Porter Mill in Beverly, the Beacon Hill Art Walk, Open Studios, commissions, pastel demonstrations at the Melrose Art Association, Peabody Art Association and the Garage Art School in Beverly Farms have filled my days with challenges and opportunities. I painted for a week last July in Toronto in my sister’s beautiful garden and created a card collection I call “Kathy’s Garden.” Teaching both en plein air and in my studio with enthusiastic and fearless students reinforces my desire to paint. And . . . planning the year ahead is another project!
